Short description: Established in 1970, this is a non-profit organization, which provides quality care for children, infant to 12 years old. It currently operates 23 centres in six municipalities within the Niagara Region. Like the children we have cared for, our organization has grown and flourished during the past four decades. The secret to our success has been our people. We have talented, dedicated and caring staff, which creates an environment for children that is both loving and intellectually stimulating. Children are our most precious resource and the first six years of their life determines their future. What's more, how we care for our children in their earliest years has a profound impact on how productive, resilient, compassionate and confident they will be as adults.

Short description: Our organization aims to provide a loving, stable and secure home environment for abandoned, neglected, disabled and orphaned children as well as a last resting place for children with terminal condition who are unable to return home due to sociable ills. Many children are the victims of poverty and abusive homes. We accommodate up to 64 children and they are legally placed within the Home through the Children’s Act 38 of 2005. We offer therapeutic activities by our full-time occupational therapist and specialised Social Workers. We do however have the priority, where possible, to stabilize and reunite these children with their families, through family reunification or place them in a loving foster care home.

Location: Durbanville, Cape Town, South Africa

Length: Minimum 3 Months

Short description: This is non-profitable organization (NPO number 011-891) that was established in 1883. The home has been the refuge to children from all races and creeds, for over 124 years. The children come from seriously disadvantaged environments caused by HIV/Aids, drugs and divorce. They can accommodate 145 children in 12 house units. There are both sexes and all ages from birth to 18 years. These children often need therapy as well as specialised care. Most of the children have had to face extreme trauma in their young lives and as a result of broken homes, extreme poverty, HIV and many other factors. Many of them have been neglected, abused sexually, emotionally and physically and experience traumatic psychological effects thereof. International volunteers are used to assist in every aspect of our home. All Volunteers stay on the premises and work on a shift basis with every second weekend off. Off days are given in the week if the weekend has been worked.

Short description: This School is specifically for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The School’s Vision is to provide support and quality outcomes based education to learners with ASD in the most effective, affordable and functional manner within an inclusive educational system. We have a dedicated, highly qualified team of professionals. Our staff is committed to providing the best possible education for learners that think outside of the box. Our teachers and specialists work together to develop each student’s potential to its maximum using a combination of one on one and group teaching. Structured teaching (TEACCH), Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) and Augmentative Communication Methods such as (PECS) and South African Sign Language are used to help our learners on a day to day basis. We provide a safe space where routine, scheduling and life skills are taught to our learners to help our learners fit into everyday society. We look at varied approaches and keep up to date on the latest research with regards to teaching learners with Autism. We provide tailor made individual education programmes that set each of our learners up towards achieving obtainable goals.
