Short description: The company is an independent Wildlife Sanctuary with the primary focus of preservation, breeding, education and research projects. Their mission is bringing wildlife to the City and bringing people and animals intimately closer together, respect for and understanding of nature is fostered and appreciation for God’s beautiful creation in its diversity is shared.Volunteers can work with a variety of monkey species, smaller mammals, a large variety of different bird species and reptiles. They support conservation on a global scale by propagating birds, monkeys and mammals in a protective environment and in as natural a state as possible. They bring wildlife to the people by establishing breeding centres and sanctuaries to show that wildlife and urban development can be compatible.

Tasks: The ideal candidate would be involved in general maintenance in terms of feeding and caring, animal husbandry, rearing of baby animals, caring for sick and orphaned animals.They can also assist with media, communications, social media, photography, education and maintenance programs.

Level of education: Veterinary or zoology or you can volunteer

Language: Good command of English.

Kind of person: Must have a passion for wildlife and should have some experience in working with animals, especially fragile animals such as birds. You must have a great sense of responsibility and be able to work independently and make the work your own. The more you enquire, the more you will get responsibilities and exposure to their activities.

Field: Working On A Farm (horses, vineyards, animals, fruit)

Location: About 1 hour away from Cape Town

Length: Any

Short description: This is a working farm. It is firstly a horse farm. The owner trains people who become horse trainers or teachers, as well as running a riding school on the farm for people from the region. They have some top riders training there, hold regular holiday camps.

Tasks: The volunteer is integrated with the day to day activities of caring for horses, including feeding, grooming, children’s camps, riding lessons, preparing horses for sessions, and more. The fun side of staying on this farm, is that you can participate in all other activities on the farm – e.g. wine making, harvesting, caring for sheep, chickens etc.

Applicant requirements: The students or candidates stay on the farm with the family or in the house where other trainees are staying. You all eat all meals with the family on the farm. This activity results in close relationships and friendships amongst the owners, their family and the interns on the farm. An amount of R5000 per month is payable for the training, accommodation, all meals, often week-ends away and transport to and from the farm.

Level of education: No requirements – except for a love for animals

Language skills: No special requirements – need to understand basic English.

Kind of person: You must have a positive attitude, be hard working and responsible, with a good sense of humor. You must enjoy nature and farm surroundings. You will no doubt enjoy working with young people and animals or you must be interested to get to know local people and have a sense of family. This is always an excellent internship or volunteer placement as everyone who has been there in the past was extremely happy and satisfied with their stay. You will not be isolated either as the farm has daily visitors from the community who stable horses there or who come for riding lessons.

Short description: The company was founded in 1974 with the primary focus of helping animal owners to sustain their pet’s healthy lifestyle. The company is a veterinary hospital with the mission of helping animals live happier, healthier lives. They are responsible for all animal needs, from nutrition to physical operations.

Tasks: The ideal candidate would play a role in all the services they render.

Level of education: Veterinary, Animal breeding or an equivalent field of study.

Language: Good command of English.

Kind of person: Must have a passion for Animals. Should have some experience in working with animals.

Short description: The company is a wildlife Centre for monkeys and apes with more than 230 animals and 28 different exotic species including Tammy, Ruby, and Sunny, their famous chimp sisters. There are also koi ponds, many bird species and small antelope on the premises.Most of the animals at this facility were born in captivity or were lonely pets, so their goal is to reintroduce the animals to animals of their own species. The company also host events at the Sanctuary as well as educate people about the animals and care for all the needs of the animals.

Location: Somerset West, Cape Town

Length: Minimum of 3 months

Short description: The company has a animal program which is an educational and community based programme created to raise awareness of the plight of the cheetah and to compaign for its survival. The companies project was first launched in 1997 with just one hectre of land proved by a farm and two cheetahs. They are involved in environmental education, offering curriculum-linked school presentations, and breed Turkish Anatolian Shepard dogs and place them on South African farms to guard livestock in an effort to reduce conflict between farmers and predators. They hand-rear cubs from cheetah breeding facilities.

Tasks: The ideal candidate would be involved in general maintenance in terms of feeding and caring, animal husbandry, rearing of baby animals, caring for sick and orphaned animals. Sometimes the work involves hard labour like building fences and gates, carpentry, digging and all tasks needed for the general maintenance of our facilities.

Level of education: Veterinary, Animal breeding, zoology or equivalent field of study.

Language: Good command of English.

Kind of person: Must have a passion for wildlife and should have some experience in working with animals.
